Two mums with a passion for running in nature will be swapping Cornish fields for the pavements of England's capital when they take part in this year's London Marathon.

Between them trail runners Gemma Priest and Melissa Nicholas, both from Helston, need to raise £3,400 by the marathon on April 28, with the money going to Sense, a charity that supports people living with complex disabilities.

On Saturday they were in the entrance to Tesco Helston, where Gemma works, continuing their training with a combined 139 miles on an exercise bike and cross trainer, and raised just over £315 in donations.

Thanking everyone who supported the event, Gemma said: "Everybody in Helston has been so good.

"Such great community support, we very much appreciate it. An extra special thank you Linda Roberts for arranging the training day."

Both keen runners, the pair said they would like to give something back whilst doing what they enjoy.

"I lost my dad last March and running has been my saviour. It's the one thing were I can get away; it's time to think and we live in such a beautiful area. So I'm running for my dad, Ivan," added Gemma.

They decided to support Sense as Melissa has worked with people disabilities for several years, at a care home in Breage and at Parc Eglos School.

Other fundraising activities include ongoing Terracycle collections in the scan-as-you-shop area of Tesco Helston, for crisp and biscuit wrappers, all plastic lids except milk bottle tops, trigger and pump heads, wipes packaging, food packaging and Pringle pots.

Also boosting funds will be a Valentine's disco this week at Landewednack School, where Melissa works, a raffle in Tesco on February 23 and a family fun evening at Helston Football Club on March 16.
