Penryn town councillors are asking residents to help them decide the future of the Glasney Field BMX track.

Several options are on the table – restoring the track to its former glory, upgrading it to make it usable for scooters or if local support for the track is not there, flattening it to use as a picnic area.

Councillor for West Ward Jo Garrett explained that the track, in its current state, is overgrown and waterlogged.

She said: "It's in a beautiful location, so it would be great to get people in there more. We are really interested to hear from the local community. Whatever people want, that will determine how much money we need."

Work to prevent flooding and improve facilities in Glasney Field was completed in October 2017 after the town council allocated just over £100,000 of section 106 funds from developers towards the project.

Previous estimates on the cost of improving the track have ranged from £15,000 for a simple repair, up to £60,000 to redesign it with a hard surface.

Residents can share their views by emailing councillor Garrett on jo.garrett@truroandfalmouthlabour.org or the town council on townclerk@penryntowncouncil.co.uk.

Cornwall councillor for Penryn West Mary May told the Packet about how the track was opened around 15 years ago after consultations with children who lived in and around the field, and those who attended Penryn Junior School.

Councillor May said: "It is now some 15 years since the track was opened, and at last Autumn's council meeting it was decided that we ask the community if they want to keep the track, as when it was last inspected it was over grown and the council would need to either bring it back to its original state, or ideas would be needed to perhaps do something different there."
