Old pillowcases and scraps of material are being turned into shopping bags by one Helston shop in a bid to cut down on plastic waste.

Volunteers from the Fishermen's Mission Charity Shop in Meneage Street have been busy sewing after hearing how Helston took the next step towards becoming a 'plastic free community' in January, when the town council agreed to support the Plastic Free Communities campaign and limit its use of single-use plastic, sourcing sustainable alternatives, as well as encourage plastic-free initiatives within the town.

The shop's plastic bags have now been collected together to be sent for recycling and non-matching pillow cases, oddments of material and old material bags have been turned into strong material bags for customers, ranging from 50p to £1.

There are also small and large paper bags for 5p or 10p.

All the money will go to the charity, with the bags made in volunteers' own time.

Shop manager Melinda King said: "They have been made with love to save the environment."
