It was a very successful weekend for Helston Athletic, who enjoyed wins across a number of different competitions.

The club's first team ran out 2-0 winners at Godolphin Atlantic in the South West Peninsula League Premier, while the second team won 8-2 at home to Lizard Argyle in the Combination League, and the thirds won 3-1 at Stithians in the Trelawny League Premier.

Those wins were earned despite eight of their players being called up to play in Cornwall under-18s' South West Counties Championship match against Devon.

Alex Wharton, Alfie Flack, Harrison Jewell, Kai Cornish, Kieran Daughtery and Lewis Tonkin were named in the 16-man squad in Cornwall's 3-1 win at the Devon FA's Coach Road home, with Cornish getting on the scoresheet.

Jackson Penhallurick (Falmouth Town) and Tom Hands (Mousehole), who play for Helston's under-18s, were also in the squad.

Centre-back Josh Storey was also absent as he is on the England Schools tour of Inter Milan.

First-team manager Steve Massey said: “It was really pleasing, from what we had out at Coach Road, with the players representing Cornwall and still to turn out all three senior teams.

"We turned out 13-14 players in each team and all the teams won, the thirds, the seconds and of course ourselves.

"We had one representing our country, and, including the two that play for our under-18s, we had eight involved with the Cornwall county team and to still then turn out three senior teams with all the subs and then all win, it really does shows the depth at the club and the quality at the club and how well we’re progressing.

"I think it says a lot for all the managers we’ve got, they’re all sounding out the same message, and the leadership from the chairman and it’s a fabulous advert for Helston Athletic Football Club.”

The absence of the Cornwall youth players gave 17-year-old Jake Flamank the opportunity to pull on the Helston first-team shirt, and he made the most of it, scoring the team's second goal moments after coming off the bench.

“It was wonderful and he’s such a nice lad, he really is," Massey said. "He’s been very patient, and his mum and dad always come and support him, they’re very supportive of what we’re doing and it was a great moment for him.”

The match was Helston's first for three weeks, with Massey comparing the long-awaited return to action to the first day of pre-season.

He said: “I like to get there a good hour and 20 minutes before kick-off but we were there at quarter past one, everybody had turned up early and it just felt a bit like coming back into pre-season training.”
