After more than three years of fundraising Porthleven Gig Club has officially blessed its new gig.

It is the second generation of gig to be named 'Energetic' - the same given to the club's very first boat when it was formed in 1991.

The name plays an important part in the port's history, as it remembers a Porthleven fishing boat that went down three or four generations ago, with the lost of six or seven crew.

Relatives of those lost still live in Porthleven today and Jeremy Richards, the grandson of one, was invited to name the gig on Saturday by pouring a bottle of Champagne over her bow.

Rev Danny Reed of Helston's Central Methodist Church led the short service and blessing on the Harbour Head, which was joined by not only club members but a large number of residents of Porthleven and other club supporters.

From the very start it has been a community club, with secretary Renate Harrison saying: "When the club formed in Porthleven people put their hands in their pockets to enable us to buy our first boat."

It was no different this time around, with the large majority of the £26,000 cost funded by the people of Porthleven through the annual food festival, gig days and coffee mornings, along with local bushinesses and sponsors.

Porthleven Supermarket made the club its charity of the year and there was also money received from the Tesco Bags of Help blue token collection.

"A huge, huge thank you to all the Porthleveners and all the people who helped and sponsored us over the last few years.

"We couldn't have done it without them," added Renate.

She also paid tribute to the Porthleven Fishermen's and Boat Owners' Association for its ongoing support and Porthleven Harbour & Dock Company for the continued use of the clubhouse on the slipway.

The new Energetic is due to be officially christened in the water this Saturday when she races at the Three Rivers endurance event at Caradon.

Her old namesake will now be given a new moniker.

And things are looking good for the club going forward, with Sainsbury's Helston making the club its charity to support this year.
