Construction of an outdoor gym and street fitness centre in Falmouth's Dracaena Playing Fields will be finished by the summer, according to the town council.

It will have a selection of state-of-the-art hydraulic outdoor gym equipment suitable for people of all ages and abilities, free of charge.

Simon Penna, Falmouth Town Council's grounds and facilities manager, told the Packet that the first phase of equipment will be installed and ready for use by June at the latest.

There are also plans for a second phase including a parkour set-up to be finalised at a later date.

Contractors are currently flattening a section of the field to create a level surface where the gym will be set up, surrounded by a gently sloping amphitheatre.

The gym equipment will have variable resistance control so that it can be used by people of all ages and abilities, and will also be Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant.

Simon Penna said: "Falmouth Town Council hope this project will complement the excellent services offered by the Dracaena Centre and directly benefit the health and wellbeing of both residents of and visitors to the town for many years to come."

Improvements to Dracaena Playing Fields have been in the works since ownership of the site was transferred from Cornwall Council to Falmouth Town Council in March 2017 as part of a devolution project.

As well as the outdoor gym, there are plans to build a world-class concrete skatepark in the bottom field to replace the old skatepark.

Alex Brinnen, chair of the Falmouth Skatepark Committee, said that they aim to finish the skatepark in time for the 2020 Olympic Games.
