Paignton 35, Falmouth 10

Falmouth were unable to avoid defeat on their trip to Paignton in their Tribute Western Counties match on Saturday.

The Eagles took the lead on the 15-minute mark thanks to Justyn Irons’ penalty, but soon found themselves on the back foot with hooker Jack Carlisle going over under the posts seven minutes later, leaving scrum-half Alex Jeffrey with a simple conversion.

The hosts extended their lead with the final action of the first half when flanker Jack Linley-Shaw finished off a good move, with Jeffrey converting out wide.

Linley-Shaw added his second try eight minutes into the second half when he dived over following a close-range scrum. Jeffrey added the extras once again.

Just when the game was slipping away from the Eagles, they hit back with Matt Brewer going over after a spell of pressure near the Paignton line on 54 minutes. Irons converted to give the visitors hope at 21-10.

But the Devonians restored their 18-point advantage with 20 minutes to go as centre Richard Champion dived over to seal the home side’s bonus point, with Jeffery making it four conversions from four.

Although the game looked to be gone for the visitors, there was a bright moment for the Eagles as David Burroughs came on for his Falmouth debut, replacing Liam Barkwill at prop.

The hosts wrapped up the scoring in the final few minutes with replacement full-back David Siddall bursting through to score, with Jeffrey converting once again.
