Builders planning to bid for a contract for the Fish Strand Hill 112-bed student accommodation site in Falmouth have addressed residents' concerns about the project.

Lanivet-based Brady Construction has not yet taken on the contract, but they will be making a bid in the next few weeks.

After hearing about the company's plans, a spokesperson for the Smithick Residents Association said: "We are surprised and disappointed that a local contractor such as Brady Construction would want to take on the project of building this massive student hostel in the middle of Falmouth bearing in mind the whole town is in complete opposition to this."

In response, a spokesperson from Brady Construction told the Packet that they could not comment on issues regarding planning permission, but that they would work with residents to ensure the building process caused minimal disruption if they did take on the project. He said: "We are a local contractor, we are local people and we worry about the environment and the community.

"I would hope we manage to work with residents and the local community to get something built. From that perspective I would think it's better to work with a local contractor than someone coming from a long distance away.

"It doesn't fill me with joy to know that there's so much bitter feeling [towards the plans]."

Plans for the 112-bed student 'hostel', in the land behind HSBC currently used as a car park, were approved on appeal in December 2017 by a planning inspector who overruled Cornwall Council's refusal.

The plans caused controversy, with a total of 184 objections from members of the public and several objections from consultees including the Falmouth And Penryn Conservation Areas Advisory Committee.
