Conditions were anything but springlike when Grade Ruan Spring Flower Show took place on Saturday.

But while there may have been gales and rain outside, inside Ruan Minor village hall spring truly did spring for the afternoon, with the room laden with seasonal flowers.

The committee had not really been expecting much this year, due to an early showing of spring blooms followed by more than ten days of strong winds in the run-up to the show.

However, the daffodil table was laden with quality blooms and it turned out to be a bumper year, with exhibitors using varieties that are normally still in tight bud for this show.

The floral art section was also bursting, as 22 people vied to be the first name on a new trophy remembering Joanna Aplin who liked to attend and enter the village shows.

The show was opened by Thora Hill from The Lizard, who has had a keen interest in local shows all her life. She was delighted to see all the young entrants and those that had made the effort to enter the Jo Aplin class, and urged them to carry on the good work and give it a go next year also, to keep these important community events alive.

Tea and cake was enjoyed by a good crowd in the afternoon and the event finished off with a raffle of donated plants and gifts.
