Police have traced the family of a man whose body was pulled from the water off Prince of Wales Pier on Monday.

He is believed to be a 59-year-old from Falmouth, although formal identification has not yet taken place.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and he will not be officially named by police.

Emergency services were called out just before 3pm on Monday following reports that a body had been seen in the water between the pier and Greenbank.

One witness said she initially thought it was a dog in the water, but upon having a closer look she "saw two feet."

Police, coastguards, the ambulance service and the RNLI were all scrambled, with Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team starting a search of the shoreline.

Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat launched to search the water and quickly found the body of a man.

The crew then recovered the body before taking it back to the lifeboat station in order for the matter to be passed into the hands of the coroner.

A coastguard spokesperson said: "A further search of the immediate area was then carried out by coastguard team members and RNLI crew.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman at this sad time."

It was the second body to be found locally within four days, after the body of a woman was found on a Truro river bank last Friday.
