More than 450 young runners from all over Cornwall gathered for this year's Coose Trannack Cross Country event.

Trannack School near Helston have hosted the event for the last two decades and the course, in the Millennium Woodland behind the school, has a reputation for being steep and challenging.

This year a total of 456 runners took part from schools and running clubs, with 414 of them at primary level.

Races started with a gruelling 2,400m for under 13s and under 16s at 9.35am, and continued for the next two hours with year six pupils taking part in 1,800m, year five 1,500m, year four 1,200m, year three 900m, years one and two 500m and reception pupils challenged with 300m

The weather was cold and windy but the rain mainly held off for the duration of the morning.

The first place primary school was Archbishop Benson in Truro with 36 points, followed by Devoran with 29 and third place was Truro with 21 points.

Secondary school winners were Penryn with 12, St Ives took second place with ten points and Penair School took third place with six points.

The wining running club was Cornwall Athletics club with 58 points, Hayle runners came second with 39 points and Mount's Bay Harriers took third place with 14 points.

Race director Andy Ross said: "This event is run solely by volunteers and Friends of Trannack School and is a testament to the hard work and effort of staff, parents and community members of the school.

"Once again Cecily Miller, aka Granny G, kindly agreed to the use of her field for parking, without which we would really struggle to accommodate all the vehicles for the event. Thank you Granny G."

This year the school has worked hard to complete a patio and seating area outside its cabin, which has created an outdoor teaching space for pupils but was also used during Coose Trannack for the sale of hot refreshments and merchandise.

"This would not have been possible without the generous donations from B&Q in Camborne, RGB builds merchants Porthleven and Jewson in Helston. Between the three stores they donated aggregate, blocks, patio slabs, timber and screws to complete the project. A big thank you goes to Sam Richards from SR construction for laying the patio area," added Mr Ross.

The date for next year's event has yet to be set, but with early interest from the Isles of Scilly 2020 could to be the furthest reaching year ever.
