The homeless couple who set up camp outside the abandoned Marks and Spencer building in Falmouth's Market Street have been moved on.

Coloured barriers have been erected outside the building by Falmouth Town Council and the police, along with other locations in the town.

The couple, who are well-known in the area, have moved to The Moor where they were seen camping by the benches outside town hall on Monday (April 1).

Richard Gates, Falmouth's town manager, said: “Crowd barriers have been placed outside the ex-M&S site and a couple of other locations in a partnership between the town council and the police and with agreement from the landlord. There is still lots of work to be done with the various agencies and this is very much ongoing.”

A local security firm, Peace of Mind Security, is assisting the town council in their efforts to improve the appearance of the high street.

Many residents expressed their concern about the appearance of the high street after the couple set up bedding and a tent in the alcove.

The town council and police took action after the Packet ran a story about the state of the building last week, and moved the couple on before jet-washing the area and setting up barriers.

One person said that they were "sad to see Falmouth like this".

Marks and Spencer shut its doors on February 2 after 86 years of trading. Richard Gates has said there is "interest" in the site, but has not yet confirmed if a new tenant has been found.
