A FIRE in a restaurant in Falmouth town centre on Thursday afternoon started in a chip fryer, firefighters have revealed.

As reported by the Packet, fire crews were called to Fuel in Arwenack Street at around 1.45pm.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has now confirmed that the fire was in an industrial fat fryer.

Staff members put a fire blanket on to the fryer before evacuating the building.

That prevented the flames from escalating, the fire service said.

A spokesman added: "Firefighters entered the building wearing two breathing apparatus and used a foam extinguisher on the fire.

"Due to the nature of the incident, firefighters remained on scene monitoring the temperature of the fryer with a thermal imaging camera before leaving scene."

On Thursday evening a spokesman for Falmouth Community Fire Station said: “Crews were mobilised to a cafe kitchen fire this afternoon; swift actions by a member of staff resulted in the fire being quickly extinguished.

“Crews monitored the kitchen appliances and provided advice on kitchen fire safety.”

A staff member at the restaurant confirmed to the Packet on Thursday that there were no injuries.
