ALL over the country candidates from all political parties and persuasions are encouraging people to vote for them in local council elections.

But while many parts of the country will be going to the polls on May 2 to elect councillors to 270 councils and six directly elected mayors, in Cornwall there will be no elections.

The next elections for Cornwall Council will be held in 2021 when the council will also change from having 123 members to 87.

Last time local elections were held – other than any by-elections – was in 2017 when the Liberal Democrats and Independent groups formed an administration to run the council.

Even over the border in Devon all councils are up for election. All those councils which are holding elections were last voted in in 2015.

Many people will be watching these local elections to see if there is any impact from the ongoing impasse on Brexit in Westminster.

However, while there will be no Cornwall Council elections in May there are other elections set to take place including the scheduled elections for the European Parliament on May 23.

For European Parliament elections Cornwall is included in the south west region which also includes the Isles of Scilly and Gibraltar. There are six MEPs who represent the region in the European Parliament.

A notice for that election was today posted by the returning officer for the South West, Graham Farrant. The deadline to register to be able to vote in the European elections is May 7.

There are also some elections being held in Cornwall for town and parish councils.

On April 25 there will be an election for a new councillor for Camelford Town Council. Elections are set to be held for councillors in St Agnes and Launceston on May 9 and an election for Perranzabuloe Parish Council is set for May 16.
