Falmouth's Greenbank Hotel organised a hugely successful beach clean where more than 50 volunteers collected 13 massive bags of plastic waste alongside miscellaneous items such as tyres, worn wellies, pipes and fishing nets.

The clean was held on Greenbank beach, located just behind the hotel.

Sponsored by Rock-based Sharp’s Brewery’s Atlantic Pale Ale, participants over the age of 18 received a free pint at the end of the clean as a thanks for their efforts. The clean was a part of Surfers Against Sewage’s ‘Big Spring Beach Clean’ campaign which is the largest and most effective volunteer beach cleaning project in the UK.

Greenbank Beach, situated on the Penryn River, requires regular cleaning due to the amount of boats and shipwrecks along the harbour side, as well as the road adjacent, which unfortunately has been known to bring many items onto the beach.

Marketing Executive, Emma Cowley at The Greenbank Hotel, said, “We were overwhelmed with how many people turned up – it was fantastic to see so many volunteers wanting to keep our Cornish beaches clean. From students, locals, staff members and even holiday-makers taking part, we managed to collect over 13 bags of plastic waste, as well as tyres, fishing nets, pipes, swimming costumes, carpets and so much more. We couldn’t have done it without our amazing volunteers, who had a well-deserved pint of Atlantic at the end thanks to Sharp’s!”

James Nicholls, senior brand manager at Sharp’s Brewery said, “With our brewery situated near the coast in Cornwall, taking care of our beaches and coastline is really important to us and we thoroughly appreciate The Greenbank Hotel for the initiative.

"We’re thrilled to be working alongside other Cornish businesses, like The Greenbank Hotel, to keep our beaches and coastline in pristine condition. Thank you also to all the volunteers who participated.”
