Plans to demolish a Falmouth cafe to build a new industrial unit have been submitted.

The application by Marnick Builders outlines a plan to double the number of their employees and build a new commercial unit.

In order to make space for the new unit, the site of the former Bickland Cafe (now Satellite Cafe) will most likely be demolished.

Current tenant Alice Sommerlad of Satellite Cafe said that they had been aware of the plans since taking up the lease after Bickland Cafe shut in October 2018, and that landlords Marnick had supported them through the whole process.

Alice said: "Our landlords have been really reasonable with us, it's been really positive."

She told the Packet that business had been improving week on week, and that they were looking to the future of Satellite Cafe with several potential new locations in mind.

Speaking about the success of Marnick Builders and the plans for expansion, director Mark Smith said: "We have never really taken a good deal from the business, we wanted to take the bare minimum and try and grow it to where it would almost run itself.

"We have always wanted to invest in the young people we employ."

As for the current tenants, Alice said that they are currently deciding whether to move to a more central location in Falmouth where business rates are higher, or else stay in the outskirts of town where people have to travel to find them.

In the meantime, Satellite Cafe is hosting their first evening event today (Friday April 19) to make use of their recently-granted late licence.

Alice said: "We're going to be doing an event for Good Friday, it'll be quite an exciting experience for us."
