Work will begin this week to restore the historic cobbles in Truro city centre - but it means a road closure.

The cobbles in two areas of Boscawen Street were previously removed temporarily and replaced with tarmac, after concerns were raised that the area had become uneven and unsafe.

Since then investigations have taken place to understand what was happening and Cornwall Council is now able to reinstate one of these areas.

The cobbles have been safely stored and work will begin on Monday to reinstate them near the war memorial. It means, however, a four-week road closure will be needed so that the material used to set the cobbles can become strong enough to cope with vehicles passing over them.

The council has been in discussions with Truro BID, bus companies and taxi operators to let them know about the planned closure.

In a bid to keep disruption to a minimum, the council plans to carry out the rest of the work, replacing the other area of temporary tarmac and re-laying more sections of cobbles in Boscawen Street, in phases.

The work has been welcomed by Bert Biscoe, Cornwall councillor for the Boscawen division, who said: “'I am glad to see that the Highways Authority has been working hard to investigate the issues with the cobbles in Boscawen Street and develop ways to bed and bond the setts so that Boscawen Street needs less maintenance and can be consistently at its best.

“Boscawen Street isn't just beautiful, it’s also busy, as a front street should be.’’
