In exactly a week's time Helston will be in the midst of Flora Day celebrations.

Kicking the dancing off at 7am will be this year's Morning Dance leaders Aaron Lander and Emma Stringer, followed by Ben Head and Natalie Bunt.

The Hal-an-Tow gets underway at 8.30am at St John's Bridge before stopping to perform at various points in the town, ahead of the start of the Children's Dance at 9.50am, leaving Wendron Street.

Crowds are likely to be at their peak come 12 noon and the start of the Midday Dance, in which Sandra Laity and Andrew Wearne, replacing the injured Giles Clotworthy, will emerge from the Guildhall first followed by Mark and Rachel Eaton, who become only the sixth married couple since 1892 to be in the leading set of the dance together.

The pairs will then switch places at the midway break in the gardens of Lismore.

The final dance of the day will see a reprisal of the 7am dancers return to the Guildhall from a 5pm repeat, following a slightly shortened route.

Police have issued details of road closures on Flora Day, which will be in operation from 5.30am to 10pm, with parking restrictions from the preceding midnight.

They affect Meneage Street to its junction with Grange Road, Monument Road, Coinagehall Street, Wendron Street, Church Street from the town centre to the Church Hill junction, Cross Street, St John's Road and Almshouse/Nettles Hill.

Godolphin Road will also be closed from 8.30am to 10.30am, and any vehicles found blocking the dance route or causing a danger to the public may be removed from any of these areas at the owner's expense.

Residents will only be allowed to park on the side opposite Dales's Butchers from St John's Close to Almshouse Hill.

Porthleven Road will be closed as far as Squires Lane from 6pm next Tuesday until 10pm and again on Flora Day from 6.30am to 10pm, with a one-way system operating in Ratcliffe's Lane between Helston and Porthleven.

A police spokesperson said: "The organisers apologise for any inconvenience this will cause, but these actions are necessary in the interest of public safety to ensure that the dance routes and other relevant areas are kept clear of vehicles."

Today sees an early "practice" for Helston Town Band when they carry out their traditional May 1 parade round the town, playing the Flora Dance. They left the Guildhall at 7am and will do so again again at 7pm, with many people choosing to dance along behind.

The route will take the band up Meneage Street to Meneage House and back again, before they head up Wendron Street, down Penrose Road into Church Street and along to Cross Street.

From here they will cut through to the Bowling Green and head up Coinagehall Street to finish back at the Guildhall.

The evening procession will also include Penhallez Hill, St Johns Road and Nettles Hill, with the whole route usually taking around an hour.
