Hundreds of people came to Helston yesterday evening to see the town's May Day celebrations.

The arrival of blue sky and sunshine helped attract bumper crowds to the day's second Helston Town Band annual May 1 parade, in which they played the Flora Dance exactly a week before the big day itself.

The first parade, at 7am, had been more overcast, although still saw a good number of people turn out to hear the band.

By the second at 7pm, however, the town centre was full of people both lining the pavements to watch and also walk behind the band on its route around the streets. Some even took the opportunity to practise their steps ahead of Flora Day next Wednesday.

After leaving the Guildhall on the hour, both processions made their way up Meneage Street to Meneage House and back again, before heading up Wendron Street, down Penrose Road into Church Street and along to Cross Street.

From here they cut through to the Bowling Green and headed up Coinagehall Street to finish back at the Guildhall. The evening procession also included Penhallez Hill, St Johns Road and Nettles Hill.
