Falmouth Gig Club's ladies team has won the World Pilot Gig Championships crown for the first time in five years, while Looe Rowing Club retained the men's title.

It's been a return to top form for Falmouth at this year's Championships in the Isles of Scilly, with the club's ladies A crew taking back the title after a few years' absence from the top spot.

The crew in gig Arwenack have performed well throughout the competition, leading the heats.

In the final they made it look effortless, although this was clearly not the case as at one point they were averaging almost 40 strokes per minute.

Ann Glanville from Caradon, last year's title holders, looked at one stage to threaten their lead, pulling back the gap to less than half a boat length.

In the event, however, Falmouth dug deep and held strong, to become ladies champions for 2019.

It means the club also automatically qualifies for at least one gig in next year's championships.

This year proved to be a strong competition for other local clubs, with the Coverack ladies crew in Morah clinching sixth place after appearing initially to take fifth in a photo finish.

And Porthleven, rowing in the club's brand new Energetic, also made the final for the first time in recent memory after a spectacular few heats.

Looe's men's team have retained their World Pilot Gig Championship crown.

Looe's Currah's Pride boat held off a strong challenge from Polvarth of Roseland Gig Club to secure back-to-back wins after landing their first men's title 12 months ago.

Coverack Gig Club celebrated their first-ever podium finish, with a photo finish handing their Morah gig third place over Caradon's Ann Glanville.
