A Falmouth group dedicated to improving the lives of some of the world's most disadvantaged people is seeking volunteers to help its cause.

Fairtrade Falmouth is working with the town council to promote the sale and use of fairly traded goods in the area.

Pat Fitzpatrick, coordinator of the Falmouth Fairtrade Steering Group, said: "Fairtrade saves lives literally, for producers of Fairtrade goods are paid a just wage with an added Fairtrade premium which they use in community projects like healthcare, education and training.

"How can you help? You can join our steering group. We are a friendly enthusiastic bunch. Meetings are every two months and take about 90 minutes. No special skills are needed, just a passion for fairness and a commitment to sharing the message that everyone can save lives by just adding a couple of Fairtrade items to their weekly shop.

"The availability and variety of Fairtrade products has increased locally, so shopping for Fairtrade is much easier than it used to be.

"Planning events, visits to local outlets, sharing ideas about ongoing promotion of Fairtrade are just some of the items discussed at our meetings. We would dearly love to have a Fairtrade presence at local events but we need to expand the team to cover these events effectively.

"We also have a small volunteer bank and their help is crucial when it comes to what we can offer at local events. We would like to enlarge this team too."

Anyone interested in joining the planning group of volunteer bank can contact Pat Fitzpatrick on 01326 316566 or meet the team at the Fairtrade stand at Parklive in Kimberley Park on Sunday June 30.
