PEOPLE living in Truro will have to wait longer before they can use a new recycling centre after Cornwall Council admitted that it will now not open until the autumn.

The Truro Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Tregurra Park was due to open this spring but work was stopped after construction firm building the site collapsed.

When worked stopped in March after Dawnus Construction Holdings went into administration the council said it hoped that it could restart quickly and the facility be delivered on time.

But this week the council admitted that the opening of the £1.75million HWRC would now have to be delayed.

In a statement the council said: “Together with our partner SUEZ we are in the final stages of appointing a new contractor to complete the work on Truro’s new Household Waste Recycling Centre.

“Once this appointment has been made we will be able to confirm the timescales for the completion of the centre, however it is anticipated that the revised date will be early autumn.

“Remaining works include the completion of fencing, lighting and final surfacing, before SUEZ’s operations team can move onto the site and prepare to open the facility to residents.”

Construction of the split-level HWRC started last July. It is located next to the park and ride service at Tregurra and will join 13 other HWRCs across Cornwall.

Once open residents will be able to take any waste which cannot be collected with their kerbside waste and recycling collections including bulky items and garden waste. The centres also accept waste such as asbestos, rubble and tyres which are taken for a charge.
