The body of a man and his dog were recovered from the shore at Stratton Terrace in Falmouth yesterday morning.
Emergency Services including police and South West Ambulance Service attended the scene just before midday, after Falmouth Coastguards had received a report of a person on the foreshore, a few hundred yards from The Greenbank Hotel.
Coastguards assisted police with their inquiries and carried out a shoreline search to collect further evidence.
During this search, an inflatable kayak and paddle were recovered a short distance down river and a little further along the beach, the body of a small dog was recovered from the water by coastguards.
The man was recovered by officers and placed into the care of the coroner and the dog was taken to a local veterinary practice by police.
A spokesman for the coastguard said: "It goes without saying that our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman at this sad time."
Although it was a warm and sunny day, there was a strong easterly breeze blowing, causing very choppy conditions on Penryn River.
Police have confirmed that a man in his 50s has been identified and his next of kin has been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious.
