THE latest climate change protest by young people in Cornwall is expected to take place today.

Cornwall Council said it expected a number of young people to gather at New County Hall in Truro and across Cornwall calling for more action on climate change.

It follows several similar gatherings earlier this year.

The council said it welcomed the passion shown by those involved and was "keen to work with them to create a collective Cornish voice to lobby parliament".

In recognition of the Council’s commitment to tackling climate change, at full council on Tuesday Cllr Edwina Hannaford was appointed to the cabinet with new responsibility for tackling Climate Change in addition to the Neighbourhoods portfolio.

She said: “I welcome the passion shown by the young people who are calling for more urgent action to tackle climate change and I look forward to talking with them and taking their ideas on board as we work towards a common goal.

"We are facing an unprecedented challenge and we are calling on Westminster to provide the powers and resources necessary to achieve the target for Cornwall to become carbon neutral by 2030.”

Cornwall Council is also urging parents and carers whose children could be absent from school to have followed the advice from their school to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children is maintained during the protest.

A protest in March was the second time in as many months that students had descended on the council headquarters to protest against climate change and call on councillors to take action, having already taken part in the national Youth Strike 4 Climate in February.

In January councillors declared a climate emergency, calling on Westminster to provide the powers and resources necessary for Cornwall to become carbon neutral by 2030.

The movement has steadily grown since 15-year-old Greta Thunberg first walked out of school in Sweden last August, demanding her government reduce carbon emissions as per the Paris Agreement.

She continued her strike action every Friday, which has gained worldwide attention, and has addressed United Nations Climate Change Conference and the World Economic Forum.
