TAXI drivers in Truro have been given an alternative space to park while the city’s historic cobbles in Boscawen Street are restored.

Works in the main street in Truro have been extended and so local taxi drivers, councillors and Cormac have come up with an alternative taxi rank.

Taxis which would normally wait near the Boscawen Street site have been given permission to wait outside Wilko instead.

Joy Arnold, secretary of Truro Taxi Association, said: “We welcome the care being taken to get Boscawen Street in good order and realise that the closure extension is essential.

“All our customers will welcome these temporary arrangements. We ask that customers use the taxis in the main rank.”

Bert Biscoe, Cornwall councillor for Truro Boscawen, said: “The town is very grateful both to Cormac for its approach to this complicated job and to highways for its co-operation to assist taxi users, especially the elderly, single parents and vulnerable people, during this necessary disruption.”

The work to restore the cobbles started earlier this month after they were removed last summer as they were becoming unstable.

When they were taken out and the road resurfaced there was criticism from some in the city who said that they gave “Truro its character”.

An extended timescale has been given to the project to allow the cobbles to settle and be able to withstand the pressure of traffic.
