A DRIVER who was high on ketamine crashed his car on Loggans Moor roundabout, a court heard.

Callum Matthew Sara, aged 21, of Roskear, Camborne, overshot the turning and drove on to the grass of the roundabout at Hayle in the early hours of Friday, November 16 last year.

Prosecutor Anita Kennett explained that Sara, who was driving a white Fiat Punto, was still at the wheel of the vehicle when police arrived on scene around 20 minutes after the crash had been reported by members of the public.

He had 60mcgs of the drug per litre of blood, with the legal limit for Ketamine being 20mcgs.

Sara, who had been disqualified from driving in 2017, pleaded guilty to driving with drugs in his system and also to possessing 14 tablets of class C drug alprazolam.

Defending, Paul Burley said that he had a quantity of alprazolam in his car because he was suffering from broken ribs.

He added that no-one else was around at the time of the accident and that Sara had stopped with the vehicle on the roundabout, rather than trying to get back on the road.

Despite having been a regular user of ketamine for three years, he said that the incident had been "such a jolt to his system" that he has since addressed the use of the drug entirely.

He added that he was a qualified mechanic who needed his licence for his job.

Sara was given a community order which requires him to do 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay £135 costs and £85 victim surcharge.

There was no separate penalty for the possession of alprazolam.
