A hotel on the Lizard Peninsula has won the title of the Best Presented Afternoon Tea of The Year, from the Food and Beverage Magazine Awards.

The final was held in London on June 14 where the Polurrian on the Lizard, situated near Mullion, was picked from a shortlist of 15 establishments that had been whittled down from the 150 entries the competition received.

Deputy general manager of the Polurrian on The Lizard, Ricky Dent, said: “We are so proud to have competed against some of the biggest 5-star hotels in the country. The judges complimented us on the provenance of our food, and I believe that this and the fact we draw upon our local area as inspiration for the menu design, really gave us the winning edge.”

Polurrian on The Lizard was the only hotel from the South West to make it through to the final with its menu inspired by the its home.

The afternoon tea comprised of a selection of sweet and savoury treats and was served with a glass of Camel Valley Brut, Cornish sparkling wine and a cup of Cornish Smugglers Brew Tea.

The team from the hotel travelled up to London on the morning of the competition with the locally sourced ingredients they needed, including a Boscarnon beef and Helford blue cheese Cornish pasty, a Trevaskis Farm strawberry and cream macaroon and a scone served with Roskilly’s strawberry jam and Roddas clotted cream.

This is just a selection of the components that saw the afternoon tea win this prestigious prize and the hotel now has plans to have the award-winning dish on the menu, in addition to their standard afternoon tea, from June 28.
