More lambs forward sold to £106.50

(74) UTM & (7) OTM Prime Cattle. Auctioneers Comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 81 prime cattle of very mixed quality, met a better trade than anticipated as deadweight quotes continue to fall.

Top was 199.5ppk for a top drawer red Limousin steer from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary, who sold another at 183.5ppk. Further smarter Limousin steers at 187.5 and 185.5ppk from J & J Meaker & Son, Langport, who also sold a well fleshed Charolais at 184.5ppk. More good Limousins at 181.5ppk twice from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter and Habberfield Bros, North Newton. Angus steers at 189.5ppk from PRS & EB Scott, Axbridge and 180.5ppk Habberfield Bros again.

Heifers peaked at 194.5ppk for a best type red Limousin from J & S Vinnicombe & Son again, who sold another at 183.5ppk. Further well fleshed Limousin heifers at 187.5 and 184.5ppk, Habberfield Bros again; 184.5ppk, SER Hunt, Kilve and 179.5ppk, J & J Meaker & Son again. Feeding Limousin heifers (510 and 512kg) at 179.5 and 177.5ppk from RJ & AM Pedrick, Buckfastleigh.

Steers sold to £1,249.64 for a 681kg Limousin from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, who sold another at £1,224.93. Charolais (704kg) at £1,235.52 from BA Richards, Williton. Further Limousins at £1,223.31 (647kg) from MJ Tuckett & Partners and £1,207.50 (644kg) from J & J Meaker & Son.

Heifers sold to £1,178.67 for a Limousin from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, who sold another at £1,089.99 (594kg). Charolais (638kg) at £1,119.69 from HWC & JM Butler, Cambridge Batch, who sold another at £1,053.13 (625kg). Further Limousin at £1,077.00 (600kg) from J & J Meaker & Son again. Angus heifer to £1,051.94 from PRS & E Scott, Axbridge.

A price of note was £1,170.62 for a 748kg Fleckvieh from SJB Adams & Son, Rhode. The Fleckvieh is a milking breed we would like to see a lot more of. 748 kilos and 156.5ppk at 22 months beats any Friesian or Holstein equivalent. A breed well worth crossing in, if not totally adopting.

56 Barren cows and cull stock bulls. Auctioneers Comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a shorter entry of barren cows, when flesh was in very short supply, particularly on the black and white side of the sale. Fleshed sucklers however, very well sold and currently wanted, as would be fleshed black and whites.

Top was 148.5ppk for a very shapely Limousin cross Blue cow from CA & B Jarvis, Priddy. Very well fleshed Saler at 142.5 and 132.5ppk from RM & BM Boundy, Winkleigh. Good meat Angus at 129.5ppk from CA & MA Ralph, Trull. Good meat Devon at 127.5ppk from Poad & Slee, Minehead. Further meat Limousins at 127.5 and 126.5ppk from JG Warfield, Limington. Meat sucklers up and down of 120ppk.

Sucklers sold to a tremendous £1,175.63 for an 825kg Saler from RM & BM Boundy. Limousin cows at £1,103.36 (743kg) from CA & B Jarvis and £1,001.88 (792kg) JG Warfield.

Black and whites rose to 115.5ppk for empty steakers from The Colgrove Partnership, St Austell, who sold others at 114.5, 108.5 and 107.5ppk. Plainer steakers generally around 100ppk. Plain cows below.

Black and whites sold to £875.93 for a Holstein (765kg) from The Colgrove Partnership, who sold another (708kg) at £817.74.

1647 Finished lambs. Auctioneers Comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much larger entry of 1647 lambs sold to a similar firm trade for all presented. The best sold to 215ppk from RC Rowe & Son. Others 214ppk from CW Padfield; 212, 211, 210 and 209ppk from S & A Bevan; 211ppk (x2) from J Sprake & Partners Ltd; 210 and 209ppk (x2) from N Nation; 210ppk from LA McAllister and 209ppk from AJB Farm Partnership and RJ Whitcombe. Trade remained equally as firm as well for the heavier lambs, which sold to £106.50 and £100 from FA Kingcott & Son. Others £100 from VEA Sparshott; £99 and £98.50 (x2) from AR Henson; £99 from T Newth; £98.50 from CHJ Atwell & Sons and A Smith; £98 from N Nation; £97.50 from Hanchard Farming Partnership and £97 (x3) from J Sprake & Partners Ltd. Overall average £86.04.
