Riverside gardens with rare plants and water features will open to the public to raise funds for the British Red Cross on Saturday.

Kennall House Gardens, in the Kennall Valley, Ponsanooth, are a collection of walled gardens, stretching across 12-acres of picturesque woodland, only occasionally open to the public.

Owned by husband and wife Nick and Mary Wilson-Holt, the Kennall House Gardens are located just four miles from Falmouth.

Mary, who works at a nearby hospital and serves as a president at the Red Cross, says her experience in healthcare inspired her to support people in crisis.

She said: “We wanted to give the public the opportunity to explore the grounds in aid of a cause we believe in. We’ve opened the garden for a number of charities throughout the years and it’s always a wonderful experience for everyone who attends.”

The event gives visitors the opportunity to explore the rare exotics and water features housed within from 2pm–5.30pm. Entrance fee is £6. Children under 12 go free.

Featuring a variety of rare trees, plants and shrubs, Kennall House Gardens overlooks the surrounding countryside, enjoying spectacular views across the valley.

The sympathetically arranged garden features a herbaceous border and a fast-flowing stream leading to a selection of small ponds.

The gardens sit on the banks of the River Kennall, where guests are invited to enjoy light refreshments throughout the day.

The gardens have been carefully developed by Nick and Mary over the past 20 years and now feature a selection of rare hyacinths, difficult to find anywhere else in the UK.

Gill Mercer, senior community fundraiser, said: “We are very grateful to Nick and Mary for their generosity in hosting this event at their home. It’s a great opportunity for people to come along and enjoy a cup of tea in the beautiful surroundings of Kennall House.”

As well as taking in the surroundings, teas and coffees can be enjoyed throughout the day.

Dogs on leads are welcome. Guests are advised to wear sensible outdoor footwear.

The garden at Kennall House, Ponsanooth, Cornwall, TR3 7HJ, is open between 2pm-5.30pm on Saturday 20 July. Entrance is £6 and under 12s go free.
