The Ministry of Defence has put in a bid to redevelop 102 homes in Helston.

It includes external refurbishments, including new roofs, and replacement of doors and windows, to houses being lived in by service families based at RNAS Culdrose.

The renovations focus on odd numbered houses, from 1 to 55 Hermes Road, 1 to 23 Esmonde Road, 1 to 27 Hawke Road (plus numbers 2 and 4), 1 to 39 Hibernia Road (plus 2 and 4), 1 and 3 Hichens Road, and 1 to 35 Troubridge Road (plus 2, 4, 6 and 8).

The MoD application for planning permission states: “The proposed project is to include alterations to the existing mansard roof, to create a vertical first floor external wall.

“[Also] installation of external wall insulation to enhance the façade and greatly improve the thermal performance of the Cornish style properties.

“Works will also include re-roofing including chimney removal [and] replacement of existing life-expired doors and windows to new PVCu replacements to match the Ministry of Defence specification for energy efficiency and security.

“Loft insulation upgrade will be included.”

Helston Town Council has given its backing to the plans and Cornwall Council must now decide whether to approve the upgrades before work can begin.
