Roadworks on a busy route next to a Falmouth school are due to start in the first week that children return from their summer holidays.

The works to improve Bickland Water Road are being funded by developer Taylor Wimpey from its recently-launched Chy An Dowr housing estate.

Work officially started on Tuesday (September 3), although traffic lights had not been put up at the time of writing.

A council spokesperson clarified that work is due to be finished by February 2020 despite an outdated road sign saying it will last just 15 weeks.

The section 278 works agreed upon by the developer as a planning condition will include new street lighting, a new pedestrian island and footpaths into the estate.

Traffic lights will be in operation between 9.30am and 4pm. Roads will also be closed overnight towards the end of the project.

Commuters have faced disruption to their journeys on Bickland Water Road at various points since April last year.

The road sees a high amount of traffic heading to St Francis School, industrial parks and a business park on Falmouth's outskirts.

Traffic lights were in place between April and December last year whilst work was carried out next to the Persimmons Homes development near the Falmouth AFC ground.

After these were taken down two more sets of lights were put up, one at the entrance of Watson Marlow for a drainage pipe to be installed and another outside the Taylor Wimpey development and St Francis School when South West Water carried out repairs.

These lights were taken down at the end of February this year.

In a letter sent to residents and businesses on Monday, Cormac's project manager Jerry Cobb said: "It is possible that you may experience some associated noise or disruption, but please be assured that every effort will be made to keep disturbance to an absolute minimum."
