It was a successful day for the youngsters taking part in Falmouth Rotary Club’s annual Run Mawnan event on Sunday, with two of the top three places on the 5k race being taken by under 18s.

Despite the forecast, the event was blessed with sunny weather as almost 250 runners gathered on the start line for the three different routes through the village.

First place on the 5k went to 16-year-old Louis Ratcliffe, of Cornwall AC, who won dinner, bed and breakfast at the Meudon Hotel; followed by Andrew Martin in second place and 14-year-old Zak Clemens in third.

The first female home on the 5k was Wendy Chapman for the third year in a row, and nine-year-old Charlie Mount took the prize for the youngest competitor on the 5k, completing the race in 27:56.

Mile High Runners Tony Brewer and Aaron Benney came in first and second respectively on the 10k, followed by Connor Toland in third place and the first female was Sarah Hoskin, winning dinner, bed and breakfast at the Budock Vean Hotel.

As always, the one-mile children’s fun run was a very close-run event with the first three boys all finishing in under 6 minutes. First place went to Finley Martin, followed by Sam Wylie in 2nd and Tama Griffiths in 3rd. The girls were close behind with Lara Harrold coming in as first girl in 6:05 with Tilly Williams and Jolie Gibbs just behind her.

Rotarian Rod Allday, chairman of the Run Mawnan committee, said: “It’s always great to see so many people turning out to take part in our annual fund-raising event and it was a bonus that the sun shone on us. The event is always popular with seasoned runners as well as complete novices, partly due to the fantastic prizes donated by local businesses. We are very grateful to them and to all the volunteers who help to run the event – we couldn’t do it without them.”

The event was supported by many different organisations from the village who each ran stalls and refreshments in the field to entertain the competitors and spectators as they waited for the results to come in.

The winners were presented with their prizes by Steve Kimberley of Kimberley’s Independent Estate Agents, who was also the compere and the main sponsor of the event. Category winners are listed below, and the full results are available at www.runmawnan.org.uk
