Helston's mayor has spoken out after the town once again missed out on funding, despite many groups "working very hard."

John Martin told town councillors on Thursday: "My concern is we are missing out on funding - high street funding that other towns seem to be receiving."

He said he had met with officers at Cornwall Council and would be meeting with the person responsible for "case shaping" - putting together funding bids for towns - regarding the projects that Helston wanted to take forward that had "been stymied recently, mainly due to funding."

Mr Martin, who is also one of Helston's Cornwall councillors along with Mike Thomas and Andrew Wallis, added: "We have presented ideas but have had very little comeback. The Helston CIC have been working very hard, Helston Town Council has been working very hard, Councillor Thomas and myself have been working very hard and we're getting very little response, and I'm very disappointed about that."

Two weeks ago MP Derek Thomas said Helston needed "clear priorities" after it missed out on millions of pounds worth of grants once again.

Camborne, Penzance, Truro and St Ives will each be receiving up to £25 million each from the new Towns Fund, as part of the government's latest bid to boost jobs and economic growth, but Helston was not on the list.

The blow came after the town already missed out on being selected for possible money from the Future High Streets Fund, which Penzance has been selected for.

Helston Community Interest Company had put in a bid to Cornwall Council for its backing on an application to the fund, with the aim of potentially taking on the former JobCentre Plus and Original Factory Shop buildings in Coinagehall Street, or even the abandoned Co-op site in the Trengrouse Way car park, but did not get chosen to be taken forward.
