A section of the main road between Truro and St Austell will see its speed limit cut to 20mph for eight months, while a new roundabout is constructed.

Works on the new roundabout, near Hill Park Crescent, on the A390 at St Mewan, are due to start on October 28 and are expected to be complete by June 15, 2020.

The speed limit on the stretch of road where the roundabout will be constructed is currently 30mph but will be reduced to 20mph for the duration of the works and will be in force 24 hours a day.

When Cornwall councillor Sandra Heyward posted details of the roadworks and speed reduction on social media several people reacted, with some saying that it will cause disruption.

The road is a busy route in and out of St Austell as it is the main road to Truro and also provides access to the nearby St Mewan School.

Kelly Peters wrote: “Not like people do 30mph now anyway. The road is a nightmare to cross to get to my home (especially during school run timing) and extremely dangerous the way people drive.”

Diana Brociner-Allen added: “Crikey, that is going to cause some problems at school times.”

The new roundabout is being constructed by Cornwall Council contractor Cormac to provide access to a new housing development which is planned on land at Higher Trewhiddle.

Wainhomes is behind the development which has outline planning permission for 460 homes. The developer said it was looking to start work on the first phase of 200 homes next year.

The housebuilder said it was planning to provide 50 affordable homes as part of the first part of the development as well as some accessible homes.

A mix of different properties is planned from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom houses.
