It’s just over three weeks until the Prime Minister’s promised Brexit date of October 31.

And while the date that the UK leaves the EU is awaited by Brexit supporters, there will not be any organised celebrations in Cornwall with the council not having had a single application to hold a street party.

It had been thought that there could be public celebrations being held by those in favour of leaving the EU, but it appears that in Cornwall there is no such appetite.

If any Brexiteers were hoping to close off their street to celebrate on October 31, it’s too late as Cornwall Council asks for a minimum of six weeks’ notice.

If you do want to hold a street party then you have to apply to Cornwall Council – there are two different forms depending on the road on which you want to hold a party. The basic form covers quiet residential streets and the standard form is for busy roads.

There is no cost to make an application to hold a street party in a low risk location like a cul-de-sac but a standard road closure charge of £42 could be charged to hold an event in a through road location.

Small, private street parties do not need a licence unless you are planning to sell alcohol or hold certain forms of entertainment.

If you want to have a pay bar, provide entertainment to the public or charge to raise money for your event then you could need a Temporary Events Notice. For this organisers have to contact Cornwall Council’s licensing department.

However with no Brexit street party plans coming forward to Cornwall Council the street party department will remain quiet for now.

But it could expect some applications next year ahead of the special 75th celebrations of VE Day in May next year.
