A mum has described walking to one Helston primary school as "an accident waiting to happen" after her two girls were almost hit by a van on a blind bend.

Emma Ball said there was a serious issue on the corner where Church Street becomes Church Hill, as large numbers of schoolchildren from both Parc Eglos School and Helston Community College attempted to cross the road to and from St Michael's Church.

She said: "Whilst walking my twin daughters home from Parc Eglos School we were nearly hit by a large van. Luckily, the van saw us and stopped otherwise it would have been an accident.

"You just can't see those cars coming round the corner - you have just got to chance it. It is an accident waiting to happen - there is going to be one, I'm sure. It's a question of time."

Ms Ball has written to Cornwall Council and copied in MP Derek Thomas about her fears, describing the crossing as "hazardous."

She told the Packet: "My daughters' health and safety is obviously of upmost importance to me as a mother. I feel helpless in resolving this issue.

"I have contacted everyone I can think of to raise this matter or public safety. I know other people have too.

"In a couple of years my children will be walking to school on their own and I am extremely fearful of this with the current state of this crossing."

She said when her children first started school there were two lollipop people but it had been 11 months since anyone was there to help families with the crossing.

"The position has been advertised but not fulfilled. However, there has been no noticeable attempt to put in a pedestrian crossing or a mirror so we can see across the road," she added.

It appears better news is on the horizon, however.

Cormac said in a statement: "Recruitment for jobs of this type is notoriously difficult. We have now successfully managed to employ someone, who will be starting as soon as the necessary checks are undertaken.”
