A Truro woman is one of seven civil engineers who will be put to the test in a challenge to give the best demonstration of their innovative projects – in just 200 seconds, or less.

Jasmine Tombs, a 26-year-old is braced for the Institution of Civil Engineers’ (ICE) Pitch 200 national final. The hotly contested event will be held in Belfast, on the 22nd October.

Jasmine said: “It’s an honour to be taking part in the ICE Pitch 200 national final. Engineering is a fascinating industry and we are at a very exciting point within the profession, in terms of both sustainability and also digital advances. Engineering has such an impact on our day-to-day lives and the ICE Pitch 200 competition will hopefully inspire the next generation of engineers and show what can be achieved.”

Jasmine secured her place in the final, which is hosted by radio host Emer Maguire, after an impressive performance at the ICE South West regional final of Pitch 200, in July.

Her presentation focused on ‘Building a Sustainable Future’ detailing why concrete – which accounts for eight percent of man-made Co2 emissions, according to a Chatham House report – should be replaced with a cross-laminated timber substitute. Jasmine believes that making this sparsely used material mainstream, could be a path to building a more sustainable future.

Having previously won the 2017 ICE Emerging Engineer of the Year Award, Jasmine will need to impress a high-profile panel of judges, including:

Mark Simpson – BBC News TV reporter.

Imogen Graves – 2018 Pitch 200 Global Grand Final winner and Assistant Design Manager at J Murphy & Sons Ltd.

Emer Murnaghan – ICE Vice President and Head of Responsible Sustainable Business at GRAHAM.

Miranda Housden, ICE South West Director, said: “We have our fingers’ crossed for our amazing South West representative, Jasmine Tombs, who never fails to entertain and deftly explain how civil engineers transform the world around us.”

The event will be broadcast live online for those unable to attend and viewers will be able to vote for their favourite presentation via sli.do.

The other national finalists include:

Alison Waterworth – Senior Project Manager, AECOM.

Conor Crawford – Technical Director, Jacobs.

Deryck Chan – Engineering Ministries International.

Grant Bellis – Graduate Bridge Engineer, Mason & Clark.

Julio Lacorzana – Assistant Engineer, WSP.

Sarah Roberts – Project Manager, Transport Scotland.
