A couple who were washed over a harbour wall and into the sea, along with their dog, have been described as "extremely lucky".

More details have been revealed about the drama that unfolded at Mullion Harbour on Saturday afternoon, which left both people injured, one of them severely.

HM Coastguard said it received multiple 999 calls at 4.50pm from members of the public who saw a woman and her dog being washed off the breakwater into the sea, after being hit by a large wave at Mullion Cove.

Her partner entered the water to help and all were able to get themselves out of the sea.

Two members of the public are also understood to have gone to help.

However, both the man and woman were injured and needed help.

A spokesperson for Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team, which was scrambled along with First Responders, said: "On arrival at the scene, one casualty had severely hurt their shoulder and the other their leg, and were required to be taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Thanks to the First Responders from Mullion Fire Service who attended and the two unknown members of the public who helped the casualties out of the water."

Phil Norman, duty controller for HM Coastguard, said it acted as a warning over the unpredictability of the sea.

He said: "The couple were extremely lucky, it could have ended very differently for them.

"This weekend we’re experiencing high winds which is making wave patterns even more unpredictable than usual. This incident shows just how easily you can be caught out by large waves.

"I really would urge people to stay well away from breaking waves, there is no doubt that they make dramatic scenes but it just takes one unpredictable wave and you may not make it home to your loved ones.

"Please stay safe, stay back and stay dry but remember if you do see someone in trouble at sea or along the coast call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
