A student in Helston has gone through to the next round of a young chef competition after making it look at easy as pie.

Mollie Chilcott from Coverack was named the winner of Helston Rotary Club’s Young Chef competition on Thursday after impressing the judges with her meal of steak pie with vegetables and hasselback potatoes.

The Helston Community College student will now compete against winners from other schools in the next round at Richard Lander School in Truro.

Describing Mollie as a “very worthy winner”, a Helston Rotary spokesperson said: “Mollie's main meal of steak pie was absolutely delicious; tender steak, crisp pastry and rich gravy accompanied by hasselback potatoes and a stack of asparagus tips and carrot sticks.”

It was the first time that the competition has been held in the new Helston Community College building, which opened in September complete with modern, equipped kitchens as part of the facilities.

Mollie has had a busy few weeks as, alongside practising for this competition, she was also preparing for a display at today’s Helston Fatstock Show, in her role as president of Helston Interact - Rotary for 12 to 18 year olds.

She is a keen fundraiser, collecting £1,100 in the last four years for Cancer Research.
