Helston turned out in force yesterday to remember the fallen when the Remembrance Sunday Parade took place in the town.

The sunshine overhead played its part in encouraging people out to watch the parade and then gather at the end of Coinagehall Street for a 45-minute service in front of the Gryllys Monument and Garden of Remembrance.

Led by Helston Town Band and involving personnel from RNAS Culdrose, Helston Air Cadets, the town's firefighters, sports clubs, schools and youth groups, the procession left the Trengrouse Way car park at 10.30am and was joined by mayor John Martin, town councillors and staff, and MP Derek Thomas with his family, at The Guildhall.

Methodist minister and mayor's chaplain Rev Danny Reed began the service with a welcome and the singing of the hymn Eternal Father Strong To Save before a two-minute's silence was observed, heralded by the sounding of the Last Post and ended with the Reveille.

The names of the town's fallen were then read and wreaths were laid by various organisations in the town, along with remembrance crosses from individuals.

Culdrose chaplain Rev Mark Dalton gave the address and led prayers, with the service also including the hymn Abide With Me and concluding with the National Anthem.

Earlier in the day, as dawn broke, a brief service next to Helston's war memorial outside St Michael's Church had taken place and the memorial was also the focus of a civic service in the church at 3pm.

A two-minute silence was also due to be observed at the remembrance garden at 11am today for Armistice Day.
