A body pulled from the water in Truro this morning was that of a man from West Cornwall.

Emergency services were at Malpas this morning after police received a 999 call about a "possible body" in Truro River, which runs behind Newham.

Police officers attended with coastguards and paramedics, with the air ambulance also landing.

A police spokesperson later confirmed that a body was recovered by a harbour vessel.

She said: "Emergency services were called around 11.10am today following reports of a possible body in the river by Newham Road, Truro.

"Police, HM Coastguard, ambulance and fire attended.

"A person was recovered from the water a short time later. They were pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death."

The spokesperson has since added that the body recovered from the water is believed to be that of a man in his 50s, from West Cornwall, although formal indentification has yet to be carried out.
