A PENRYN man caught doing 99mph was using cruise control on a Mercedes that he didn't usually drive.
Oliver James Graffy, aged 25, of St Gluvias Street, appeared before Truro magistrates to plead guilty to the offence, which took place on the A30 on April 3 at Stowford Cross, Devon.
The marine surveyor, for whom driving is a key part of his job, was on his way to a training course just after 8am, when a manned police camera on a bridge recorded his excessive speed on a 70mph road.
Defending himself, Graffy said that on the day in question, the roads were very quiet and he used cruise control on a vehicle which he didn't regularly drive.
"I shouldn't have been doing it, they caught me fair and square," Graffy told magistrates.
He was fined £246 and ordered to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge. His licence was endorsed with six points.
