A hunt is on to find Flora Day dancers who took part in the event 75 years ago.

Helston had refused to let the Second World War get in the way of their annual feast day and a reduced version still took place - just as victory in Europe was declared.

Now Helston Town Council wants to find people who danced that day, to be guests of honour at next year's event, with an invitation to the Guildhall and the Flora Day Mayor's Lunch.

It is one of the ways being looked at by the town council to recognise the 75th anniversary of VE Day in Helston next year.

With the anniversary bank holiday falling on the same day as Flora Day, May 8, councillor Rev Danny Reed said he feared that it could be lost amongst the celebrations.

He suggested adding extra flags, perhaps Union Jacks, at least around the Guildhall if not the whole town centre.

Rev Reed said the Central Methodist Church in Coinagehall Street would be dispensing with greenery for one year only, in order to just fly flags.

Town clerk Chris Dawson reported that the Flora Day Association was already considering the possibility of different, VE Day flags in the Market Place and Guildhall area.

The council agreed to set aside £1,000 from the unspent hanging baskets budget to be used on decorations, with the specifics yet to be decided.
