One of Porthleven's most familiar faces has sadly passed away.

Michael Crowle died last night. He was well known in the village for his work as a councillor and in the town band.

Councillor Mark Berryman, who worked with Michael for many years, shared a moving tribute to his late friend after hearing of his death this morning.

He said: "Mike was one of the great characters of Porthleven. He was always impeccably dressed and a true gentleman.

Falmouth Packet:

"He was dedicated to serving the people of Porthleven and he was an excellent councillor, always thinking of what was best for Porthleven.

"Mike was someone whose company I always enjoyed inside and out of the council chambers.

"It's a great loss to the town really."

Lynne Lees, trustee of Porthleven Town Band, said: "Michael adored Porthleven Town Band and we adored him back. He was fiercely proud, loyal, energetic and enthusiastic.

Falmouth Packet:

"He would charm visitors and locals alike at our concerts and his skills with the Porthleven Town Band collecting can were renowned."

The band will be holding a private remembrance evening next week where members will relive memories, raise a glass and sing a few songs.

Lynne added: "He would have loved that so much and we will be the poorer without his familiar presence.

"Michael was always dapper and cheerful, he leaves a huge hole in the band family and he will be deeply missed, particularly next summer when he was always such a familiar and comforting presence at our concerts at the Harbour Inn.

"We send our sincere condolences to Maureen and their family. And what finer thing to say about someone than this: May he rest in peace, he was loved, he will be missed."
