A project to encourage cycling in Helston faced a spoke in the wheels when it was discovered that to add cycle stands to council land would cost £500.

Helston and the Lizard Peninsula Friends of the Earth has given £200 for the stands to be placed at the Trengrouse Way Extension car park, but the brakes were put on when Cornwall Council said a licence to use the land would be £500.

Projects officer Martin Searle, who has been working with the Helston Projects Group to get the stands in place, described it as "disproportionately high compared to the cost of the cycle stands," but added that after appeals were made by Helston's Cornwall councillors and the area's localism officer, the council had reduced the cost to £100.

Mr Searle told the town council this was "very welcome" but added: "I think there's still an issue moving forward.

"The Helston Community Interest Company has plans for further stands - most of them will be on Cornwall Council land.

"This issue isn't going to go away."

He said there were plans to find a better long-term solution, adding: "We are not the only community encouraging cycle stands as a method of mitigating climate change."

The town council agreed to pay the one-off £100 fee to draw up the licence in this instance.

Helston Town Council declared a climate emergency in March, two months after Cornwall Council declared one in January and vowed to work towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
