TRURO Cathedral and Truro School Prep have announced the date for their Chorister Experience and Cushion Concert.

It will take place on Saturday, January 25 between 12pm and 3.30pm and is an opportunity for boys currently in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 to learn about life as a Truro Cathedral Chorister.

The cathedral’s director of music, Christopher Gray, said: “Being a cathedral chorister is a truly special thing that goes beyond the enriching experience of singing great music every day to become a way of life for the boys and girls who do it. Our boys all receive scholarships, with means-tested bursaries available, to attend Truro School and love sharing the music they sing with others.

"They are looking forward to welcoming new faces and performing with those who come on Saturday 25 January.

“Whether or not your son is interested in applying to be a cathedral chorister, this will be a stimulating and fun-packed morning, looking behind the scenes at the precious choral tradition that dates back to the 1880s.”

Boys will be able to explore the cathedral and take part in a range of activities including singing with the choristers. The day will end with a cushion concert in which the cathedral choir's boy choristers will introduce and sing a short programme of beautiful music.

2019 has been a busy year for the choristers. As well as regularly performing in cathedral services, the choristers have enjoyed a number of highlights including receiving a standing ovation on Britain’s Got Talent and the releasing of a professional CD in conjunction with BBC Radio 3, showcasing works by Bulgarian-born Dobrinka Tabakova (b1980), the current composer-in-residence with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Mr Gray added: “The choristers are part of a close team who support each other and they have opportunities that few children will ever experience. The boys and girls are custodians of a very long-running tradition and they do something that is very important to the cultural life of Cornwall. Cornwall has a proud tradition of music and they are one of the jewels in the crown of Cornwall's musical landscape.”
