Police have warned people against trying to see the 60ft whale that died after being stranded at The Lizard yesterday, due to concerns over their safety.

The giant of the ocean was discovered on rocks at Nare Point.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue, a voluntary network of trained marine mammal medics who respond to such incidents, said it was alerted to the fin whale at around 2pm.

Since then a huge number of people have been attempting to see it, despite access to the secluded private beach being narrow.

This has led to police issuing a warning against trying it.

A spokesperson said: “Members of the public are advised not to attend the privately owned beach, due to the possibility the road network could become severely congested, causing long delays in the locale.

“Consideration should also be given to the safety aspects surrounding the rapid decomposition of the whale's body.”

A spokesperson for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said a small group of its medics had gone to assess the situation, but on arrival found the whale had died.

This was confirmed by a vet at 3.45pm.

"We are now collecting measurements for the strandings network, who will then follow up with their own investigations,” they said.
