A teenager has been sentenced to 12 months in a young offenders' institute following the death of Camborne school girl Shakira Pellow from MDMA (ecstasy).

Oakley Willoughby, 18, from Camborne, was convicted of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug, namely MDMA, to his cousin Shakira and three other teenagers.

He was sentenced today, following a three-day trial at Truro Crown Court, during which the jury unanimously delivered a guilty verdict.

Willoughby’s co-accused, Joshua Fletcher-Ward, also 18, from Redruth, is due to be sentenced next month having previously pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug, MDMA to Shakira and to another male.

Shakira took pills with her friends at Pengegon Park in Camborne, Cornwall on July 6 last year and died in hospital the next day. After suffering from multiple cardiac arrests and organ failure, the 15-year-old passed away in hospital.

After the incident, three other 15-year-olds were also taken to hospital and later recovered from the effects of drug taking.

Detective Inspector Glenn Willcocks, said: "Today sees the conclusion of a lengthy investigation into the supply of MDMA (ecstasy) to Shakira Pellow and three other young people, the youngest aged 13.

"The outcome assists to bring closure for Shakira’s family and friends and holds those involved in the supply of the drugs responsible for their actions. Anyone who provides another with an illegal drug takes on significant risk; sadly in this case Shakira and her family paid the ultimate price.

"This case serves as a tragic reminder of the risks associated with the use and supply of drugs and I would urge those involved in either, to seriously consider the consequences."
