The community of Helston is banding together to get behind a fundraising appeal launched by Helston Town Band.

Members need to replace their famous blue and gold-braided uniforms in time for this year’s Flora Day.

With so much time spent outside - including walking the streets of Helston for miles every May 8 - the jackets and hats have faded over the years, with some now unwearable.

The band has a target of £10,000, with a jacket alone costing £220 each and more than 30 of them needed.

Since launching the appeal just over a week ago, residents and businesses have already shown their support in force, with £1,475 donated in cheques and a further £385 given via an online fundraising page at uk.gofundme.com/f/helston-town-band-flora-day-uniforms.

A Sponsored Blow event at the Godolphin Club on Saturday raised £600 through a raffle and donation buckets, with the figure not taking into account all the sponsorship money collected by band members.

The event saw them playing for six solid hours, with members of the public getting the chance to conduct them at certain points.

Band secretary Tracy Broughal said: "The local people and businesses have really supported us.

"Even on Saturday, in that awful weather, people came in soaked but had a piece of cake and listened to the music. It was really good. And it was different people coming in through the door, which was nice."
