A NEWPORT COUNTY fan is raising money for a Bradford charity, in an attempt to right the wrongs of a fellow supporter, following a shocking incident on Saturday.

Jim Drewett, who has been a Newport fan for 35 years, said he was appalled to hear that a fellow fan had mocked the 1985 Bradford City stadium fire, at Saturday's clash between County and the Bantams at Rodney Parade.

Mr. Drewett, a hospital porter, has set up a JustGiving page to raise money for Bradford Nightstop, which provides emergency accommodation to homeless people in the city.

"I don't know the full facts, but I'm disgusted to hear claims it was about the Bradford fire and I don't want my club to be associated with that", he said, speaking on the incident.

"The alleged comments make the city of Newport and Newport County look bad and I wanted to show that 99.9 per cent of County fans are decent people."

A complaint has been lodged to the FA by City and Newport, with Gwent Police investigating the incident.

City manager Stuart McCall said that a fan in one of the Newport sections of the ground, who was close to the dug-out and was waving a Leeds United flag, shouted 'burn Bradford, burn', in a reference to the Valley Parade fire, which killed 56 people.

Reports suggest that some supporters also chanted about a chip van, in reference to a 1986 incident where Leeds fans set a chip van alight at Odsal - City's temporary home ground after the fire - which some perceived as being done to mock the disaster.

McCall, whose father Andy was one of those injured in the 1985 fire, said, "He [the fan] was waving a Leeds flag but that didn't bother me. He just kept going, 'Leeds, Leeds', which had no relevance to anything", he said.

"I was just ignoring it. But when I did turn round and he shouted, 'burn Bradford burn', that's when I couldn't hold back. I flipped a little bit. It was those three words from one sick individual."

Chris Watson, Project Development Manager at Nightstop Bradford, said, "The incident was a sad story to hear of, but we're glad that it has at least now had a positive outcome.

"As a football fan myself, I know that fans can get caught up in the moment and might say things they wouldn't normally say. But what happened crossed a line and there's no excuse for it.

"We're very grateful to Jim for raising the money and we hope it will also raise awareness of homelessness."
